When selecting outdoor upholstery fabric, two synthetic contenders dominate the conversation: spun polyester and acrylic. While both are engineered for exterior durability, their performance profiles differ significantly under real-world conditions.

Spun polyester offers excellent dimensional stability and high tensile strength, making it a cost-effective choice for patio cushions and parasol canopies. Its fibers resist stretching and abrasion, which is critical for furniture that experiences frequent use. However, standard spun polyester can be more susceptible to UV fading and moisture retention if not treated with specialized coatings.

Acrylic outdoor fabric, especially solution-dyed variants, is renowned for colorfastness and a softer, more textile-like hand feel. Acrylic fibers repel water naturally and dry quickly, reducing the risk of mildew in humid climates. Premium acrylic fabrics also carry longer UV-resistance warranties, often up to five years.

For marine environments, the salt-air and spray test is decisive. Acrylic generally outperforms spun polyester in salt resistance, though newer spun polyester marine grades with fluorocarbon finishes are closing the gap. If budget is a priority and the application is partially shaded, spun polyester remains a strong candidate.
